My friend Kat makes amazing chocolate. Better than that, she teaches others to make amazing chocolate. As a Kale Spa customer and In*Voke Cacao Raw Chocolate enthusiast, she invited me to offer commentary. Here it is.

Three ingredients,
Silky smooth and not too sweet:
Explosims of mind.

the joffre posse

This past weekend, to avoid the gnarly avalanche danger, I set off with a wonderful posse into the Joffre Lakes area. There was lots of beautiful.

Dan and Courtney did their pre-departure training. Now they are living at a Royal Leamington Spa.

We stayed pretty safe.

But it is hard to tell which actions might leave you up to your neck in snow.

In some cases, we were cavalier in the face of imminent danger.

It was a good day.

And then we slept at skookumchuck hot springs. That was rad too.

a walk in the park

I just returned from three days at diamond head. It was an adventure in support of a research project being done by Miki. She is investigating the effects of crowding on visitor experience in parks and is using this area as her focus. If you have ever spent time at red heather or elfin lakes shelter, I know she would love to love to get your input. Let me know and I will connect you.

The trip started pleasantly enough with packs on our backs as we ascend the well trodden trail from the parking lot to the red heather hut and beyond to the the elfin lakes shelter.

Miki charges forth into the unknown. Actually she had been here before. Miki charges forth into the somewhat known.

We took breaks as needed.

All breaks were well earned.

And it started to snow.

Miki is a trooper. This is what her smile looks like when it is still genuine.

The 450 m up and 5 km long trek to red heather took about 2 hours. Then it started to snow even more. So we had to start breaking trail. The trip from red heather to elfin, about 250 m up and about 6 km long, took about 2.5 hours. The snow storm made it tough to see very far. So did dusk.

Visibility was "poor". Wits and instincts were "awesome".

We eventually reached the cabin.

Much cozier on the inside.

Prevailing winds were out of the right.

The snowfall stopped in the night. A midnight pee yielded the most spectacular view of the trip for me. The nearly full moon was lighting up all the surrounding mountains. I could see stars and the moon clearly. I took a mind photo. In the morning the view was still pretty good.

Miki and I strapped our skis back on and did a bit of exploring. The snow was super wet and heavy and the diffuse light made it very difficult to see terrain features.

Long range navigation may have improved but the snow surface is so smooth and the light so diffuse that short range navigation is still almost impossible. Sometimes we just walked right into a snow drift.

Wacky stuff

As potential respondents arrived at the cabin we changed to research mode and Miki put her head into the surveys.

It snowed all afternoon and night. For the journey out we were breaking trail again. This time the snow was really heavy and very deep. Official reports from the surrounding area at similar altitudes are saying it was up to 175 cm of freshies.

The trees looked like magic and offered the only glimpse into the shape of terrain features

Our descent from the elfin cabin back to the red heather hut took 4.5 hours. It was an exhausting slog. But we prevailed.

At red heather we once again hit a trodden track and we were actually able to ski. The 5 km zip down to the car took under 30 minutes. It was easy to find our parking spot. Not so easy to find the car.

I'm pleased to report this was the only thing we needed our shovels for

I expect the mountains to dwarf the elfin lakes

I have been selected for a position as a research slackie. I expect that by the end I will be a super pro at human geography stuffs.

Miki is doing research into the effects of crowding on experience at BC parks. We are going to live at Elfin Lakes for a few days. I am her gear mule, assistant, and all around subordinate for the duration of the adventure.

I am stoked for time in the snow.

the snake is dead. Booyeah.

FAQ:
THE “SNAKE FIGHT” PORTION OF YOUR THESIS DEFENSE.

reprinted from McSweeney’s
– – – –

Q: Do I have to kill the snake?
A: University guidelines state that you have to “defeat” the snake. There are many ways to accomplish this. Lots of students choose to wrestle the snake. Some construct decoys and elaborate traps to confuse and then ensnare the snake. One student brought a flute and played a song to lull the snake to sleep. Then he threw the snake out a window.

Q: Does everyone fight the same snake?
A: No. You will fight one of the many snakes that are kept on campus by the facilities department.

Q: Are the snakes big?
A: We have lots of different snakes. The quality of your work determines which snake you will fight. The better your thesis is, the smaller the snake will be.

Q: Does my thesis adviser pick the snake?
A: No. Your adviser just tells the guy who picks the snakes how good your thesis was.

Q: What does it mean if I get a small snake that is also very strong?
A: Snake-picking is not an exact science. The size of the snake is the main factor. The snake may be very strong, or it may be very weak. It may be of Asian, African, or South American origin. It may constrict its victims and then swallow them whole, or it may use venom to blind and/or paralyze its prey. You shouldn’t read too much into these other characteristics. Although if you get a poisonous snake, it often means that there was a problem with the formatting of your bibliography.

Q: When and where do I fight the snake? Does the school have some kind of pit or arena for snake fights?
A: You fight the snake in the room you have reserved for your defense. The fight generally starts after you have finished answering questions about your thesis. However, the snake will be lurking in the room the whole time and it can strike at any point. If the snake attacks prematurely it’s obviously better to defeat it and get back to the rest of your defense as quickly as possible.

Q: Would someone who wrote a bad thesis and defeated a large snake get the same grade as someone who wrote a good thesis and defeated a small snake?
A: Yes.

Q: So then couldn’t you just fight a snake in lieu of actually writing a thesis?
A: Technically, yes. But in that case the snake would be very big. Very big, indeed.

Q: Could the snake kill me?
A: That almost never happens. But if you’re worried, just make sure that you write a good thesis.

Q: Why do I have to do this?
A: Snake fighting is one of the great traditions of higher education. It may seem somewhat antiquated and silly, like the robes we wear at graduation, but fighting a snake is an important part of the history and culture of every reputable university. Almost everyone with an advanced degree has gone through this process. Notable figures such as John Foster Dulles, Philip Roth, and Doris Kearns Goodwin (to name but a few) have all had to defeat at least one snake in single combat.

Q: This whole snake thing is just a metaphor, right?
A: I assure you, the snakes are very real.

OLD

I learned my age while I was in Toronto.

While riding in a taxi with Sean and Jess, we were discussing the recoloured decrepitude that comes with extreme old age. I commented that I had, heretofore, seemingly managed to not gain any grey hairs, despite many of my younger friends beginning to accrue them. Jess thought she could see one.

I have checked and found three. I decided to collect one as an evidence specimen so now I have only (at least) two. Clearly this is, for the time being, a renewable resource. I feel no hesitation harvesting this sample.

Check it.
