Ciao

Wednesday morning Sarah and I drove north to Masset. We stopped in Port Clements for fuel and the view. The former was about $1.60/L and the latter was priceless.

It wasn’t windy, but it was awfully chilly. The sun was nice.

We slept two nights at Agate Beach and visited Tow Hill.

The moon rise was grand. The sunrise a few minutes later painted the sky beautifully.

Alas, the olde truism eventually set in; all good things must come to an end. I got in one last photo as I stood on the beach watching Sarah’s plane taxi before takeoff.

May the adventure be with you…

did I drunk?

St Mary’s Spring is a thing on the map here. It is on the east coast between Skidigate and Tlell.

That wooden sign reads “Drink of these waters and you will always return to the islands”. There is also another sign that says the water “may be safe for drinking”.

What if you just go for a dip?

Storm troopers

Yesterday Sarah and I visited the Pesuta shipwreck. It is an old log barge that ran aground in 1928 at the south end of what is now Naikoon Provincial Park.

The walk there and back is about 12 km. The walk begins in a dense forest with a good compliment of old growth spruce. We found one old spruce that had recently come down while keeping its root mass largely intact. The spread of its roots was so broad that many other flora were growing on top of them. The most substantial of these was an alder over 30 cm  in diameter. It was completely uprooted and fell over in parallel when the spruce came down. In this photo you can see the two stacked behind Sarah.

Here is the root mass next to a 183 cm human figure for size comparison.

This old spruce is still weathering storms and fighting the good fight. I gave it a hug for encouragement.

IMG_0477

I found another old spruce with a hollow at the bottom. I climbed inside with the critters and searched for a spiritual experience. Then I left to see a broken boat.

We arrived at the shipwreck as a storm began to pick up. The beach walk is rather exposed and we certainly learned some lessons about how quickly the wind can get sharp. The wreck itself provided some nice shelter for a snack and rest.

Name that species!

If you can identify this tree species correctly and completely, I will reward you with chocolate.

So far it has stumped two fire fighters and a forester. Best guess so far is that it is some sort of fir.

Gray Bay

Saturday morning Team Snurfklist set off for Gray Bay on the east coast of Moresby Island.

The ferry terminal in Skidegate about five minutes from home and the boat crossing route stays in the protected passage between Graham and Moresby. We saw an eagle perched on a buoy.

IMG_5133

After landing in Aliford Bay we began the trek east toward Sandspit. The mossy rocks and rocky beaches warranted a stop.

We spent a bit of time exploring the town and went to the end of the paved road.

IMG_5150

The 15 km from Sandspit to Gray Bay is along a dirt road with gorgeous scenery. I think that might be a common combination en route to interesting places in Haida Gwaii.

IMG_5171

We stopped at an ocean side boulder because I wanted to play. I found some small crabs and the bone of a critter. Animalia cordata I bet.

We stopped again several times because the moss was so drippy it craved our attention.

IMG_5192

We arrived at Gray Bay mid afternoon and promptly got on with setting up camp as sunset is around 6 pm these days.

IMG_5275

Moss under the tents made the thermarest almost redundant.

IMG_5245

Our campsite was perched right on Gray Bay.

IMG_20130202_165941

I went out exploring the two rocky peninsula.

IMG_0455

I took enough photos out there to make a 360 degree panorama. After stitching it together I noticed Tess is in it twice (on the beach, near the centre).

We built a fire. Sarah serenaded softly.

The next day we explored the Kunxalas conservancy. I started brushing up on my tree identification. Under Tess’s tutelage I managed to get a handle on the hemlock, spruce and alder. I already knew how to spot the cedar. There was also a mystery tree. More on that later.

Tess climbed up the bank to investigate a pile of fur. Then she discovered she was nearly standing atop a skeleton. This one I am sure is Animalia Cordata.

The day ended with a return to home in Queen Charlotte. On the boat ride back I got some great hints from a man on the ferry named Ryan on where to fish for steelhead salmon in a nearby river. Stoked on that.

Phil, I cannot tell from the grain of this rock if it is deciduous or coniferous in origin. Please help.
