Tyranny in the land of the free

I have seen pictures of Americans riding dinosaurs, but didn’t know how serious it was until now.

I spotted this beast from the highway and the trek south paused for an investigation.

It turned out just to be bait and I had to use all my physical prowess and cunning to avoid the van falling victim to a great tyrant.

This is a dangerous country.

git er dune

We rented a dune buggy. Tess wanted to relive a childhood memory of visiting the Oregon dunes with her family.

She was adamant that she got first drive.

image

The setting was beautiful. The dunes were between two stretches of forest with ocean at one end.

image

She shredded the gnar.

image

After a time it was my turn to drive.

It seems Tess’s constitution is better suited to the driver seat, so I even got some solo time to go for a rip.

It was great fun and a stop I won’t soon forget.

gone, Oregon

Alice and Phil have loaned their wonderful van and it has become the cornerstone of an adventure down the west coast.

This is last night’s ocean-side resting place.

Driving along the beautiful Oregon coast today. In places there are some beautiful yellow flowers that make me think of Gail, for some reason.

I think it may be called “scotch broom” — a plant I think I have heard her mention a few times. I don’t recall the all details but, although she has brought it up from time to time, I don’t think she has any at her home. Or, if she does, there isn’t much of it. I will have to watch for it on the drive north back to BC. If it has gone to seed I will be sure to pick some and spread it around her yard as a nice surprise.

thank you for the promotional material

I have now departed on a journey to the US of A. I will return in two weeks. Before departing I phoned my mobile service provider to arrange a US roaming package. During the “identify the caller” stage of our conversation I was asked for my post code. It turns out the one they have on file is out of date by several moves as I have been using electronic billing for several years. I asked what they use the address for. The answer: promotional material. I asked to have my account flagged to not receive such things. Apparently this is not possible.

EFFF THAT.

I asked if I could please update my mailing address. After a quick google search I gave them 100 Westmorland Street, Moncton, New Brunswick. It is the mailing address of their corporate headquarters.

Problem. Solved.

[exit stage right]

playing wildly

Miki took me ziplining. It was a good deal of fun. I offer the following chronicle.

Ancient treasure

I am in Hunnermile sorting through some of the bits I left behind when I first left home to live in Kamloops. Some of the finds have put a solid grin on my face.

I found the four install disks for what was once pretty much the best computer game ever: Duke Nukem. Time to kick ass and chew gum, and I’m all outta gum.
image

I found my ticket stub from the solo trip I took to Europe when I was 12. Apparently mum took some heat for letting me do that.

I found momentos from my earliest forays into strategic long term investing.

The tooth fairy was clearly trying to corner the market on teeth. It was pretty evident to me that while the ivory mine in my face was likely only to produce spare teeth during a short time window, this tooth fairy character was offering cash payouts barely greater than the return on investment for an hour spent digging in couches for lost copper. My Dutch mercantile heritage demanded I hedge on a few teeth in case there was a market shift.

Also, I clearly wasn’t awesome at brushing my teeth, as judged by the impurities in said ivory.

Surprisingly, it turns out I was a bit of a shit in highschool. I found some old samples of my homework and exams. How I passed anything is baffling. Apparently I was always willing to sacrifice grades for an opportunity to be cheeky. A favourite was found in a grade ten history exam where my long-answer response to a query about the key differences between World War I and II focused on the relative stylishness of the hats worn by the soldiers.

Nowme is entertained by the antics of yesterme and impressed by the tolerance and patience of yesterme’s instructors.

best name for a kid

What would you name your intersex, eight legged kid? The answer in Croatia is “Octogoat”. This is an amazing name for an unusual variant of nature.

octogoat

Octogoat. Wow. Too bad you are not expected to live a very long life–you could be just the pushmi-pullyu the world needs.

More info from CBC is here. Props to Lorne for the tip.

out of the silent deep

I have not posted in a while. Much has been going on. Some perhaps worth writing about. Some perhaps not. This latest turn is too big not to remind people of the omnipresent danger of godless killing machines in the sea.

A goblin shark was caught and released last week. As expected, it was scarier than a host of demons.
