100 km, wtf ?!?

Today I began running for my former employer, Sean McKenna. He is a leader I am pleased to have had the opportunity to work with. Sean is the VP Operations (and co-owner) of NRI Distribution, a warehousing and distribution company in Kamloops, BC. My work at the company was in the IT department meaning that it was my job to enable his department to do their job. In the first few years of my work there, the company was doubling in size each year resulting in a variety of technological and operational growing pains. At that time, my hours of work seemed to be “whenever someone needs help with technology” (day or night), unless it was a big snow day at Sun Peaks.

I had been told early on by Sean that he had an “open door” policy. Within my first months at NRI I decided to test it by bringing up what I perceived as inefficiencies in the way things were run in the warehouse. Despite my complete lack of experience in all things related to warehouse operations (I was an IT guy remember), he patiently listened to all my feedback and then offered reasons as to why some of those things were that way without giving an aire of defensiveness or condescension. The manner in which he welcomed my feedback, then and on subsequent occasions, stands as an example to me for how I should listen to everyone who sees a different way I might be doing things.

I will also never forget his words the day I gave notice that I would be leaving NRI (in six months) to pursue an engineering degree. He looked me squarely in the eyes and said “I gotta shit.” Then he left the room.

The work hard / play hard attitude entrenched in the culture at NRI continues to fuel me at school and in endeavours such as this absurd running I am doing. I am appreciative for the support and I look forward to pounding out these 100 km like I am back on the NRI payroll.

Today’s 12 km took me out along the seawall on a chilly, rainy, and cloudy (but otherwise gorgeous) Vancouver evening.

10 with James

Today was beautiful! I had a relaxed leisurely bicycle ride out to UBC and put in a morning of work in the lab. Then, at noon, I went for a run with James. When he donated $10 he stipulated that the 10 km were to be run with him. We enjoyed a lovely jog through the forests that border UBC (Pacific Spirit Park). Today was also my dads birthday. He died this past winter. James and I talked a bit about him and shared some laughs. Also, I prattled on plenty with endless segues and divergent thought trains. I think he got more than he bargained for.

After our run I decided I should register for the Scotiabank Half Marathon so that I can actually participate in the run to end poverty. My name can now be found listed near the bottom at “Williams”.

If anyone else is feeling foolhardy enough to participate, they gave me a coupon code that will save you $5 at registration. Group ID Code: 8643.

Now I begin 100 km for Sean. It is my intention to complete that within 20 days. I declare: this hair farm can run.

25 for Ni4ky

I went for a 6.5 km run with my roommate, Dylan, this morning. Then I forced him to take a picture of sweaty me with no shirt on. This completes the 25 km owed to Ni4ky.

GPS, heart rate monitor, morning beer in personalized mug made by Dylan, and my morning beer gut.

I have been on a few morning runs with Dylan. Some along bike routes and some along the seawall. The seawall has proved better for two reasons. The first is obvious: the burrard inlet is gorgeous in the morning. The second reason is far more compelling: there is a starbucks convenientlty located at the distance from home Dylan needs to run before his morning constitutional becomes a pressing matter. I’m sure the coffee shop staff appreciate the morning delivery.

Technologically enhanced

I bought a gps: the Garmin Forerunner 305. This decision was borne out of a desire to get a grip on both my pace and my heart rate. The two are no doubt linked and are probably good metrics of how close I am to blowing up my innards.

Todays run was 10.24 km at an average pace of 5.00 min/km (12 km/h) for a total time of 51:13. My route is shown below!

And now my heart rate vs distance. My speed is also shown. As is a bit evident, I finished with an uphill push.

This device has many features for pre-programming a “workout”. My next step is to set it to alarm if I vary my pace too far from a target and also alarm if my heart rate rises too high. Maybe next time I will include a photo of my sweaty sexy chest with the heart rate monitor attached…

Accounting

I feel like I have made a good start! As of yesterday afternoon I have run about 16 km for $265 pledged. I am more than 6% done. This endeavour is not going to be a problem at all. In fact, I am so recklessly overconfident that I am awarding myself a break until Sunday. Also, my legs hurt. Apparently running for the bus occasionally did not constitute training for my training.

I have added an accounting page to make it easier to figure out whose kilometres I am working on. I am presently nearly halfway through those imposed on me by Ni4ky. I notice his brother James B is also sending me off to pound the pavement. His strategic choice of 21 km made me smile. I may even make it a 21.1 km run to satisfy the spirit of his pledge. I think by the time I am that far down the list I might be able to do it all in one shot. We’ll see.

Yesterday Icebreaker opened a new store in Kitsilano. They had a 50% off sale where they served beer. I had “more than one.” I bought some new undies and then went for a run. Merino undies and beer: I don’t think the world knows a more powerful placebo. Last time I had new merino undies I went swimming in them down at wreck beach.

I wonder if Arwen’s Apparel might start a mens-line with their bamboo or ChitoSanté fabric? That would make for some gnarly running pants!

First 5 km

Today was a busy day filled with research at UBC followed by meetings with Fair Trade Vancouver and then Fair Trade SFU. I finally bicycled home and discovered that $140 has been pledged so far. Gnarly.

I figured I should get this train running, so to speak. Patrick was the first to donate, so that means his 5 km is up first.

This is what I looked like before the run (about 10:45 pm), complete with dinner in hand. I specifically left my hair out for the photo after being branded as a “hair farm” on facebook.

The run felt pretty good. The last kilometer felt the best. Probably because I was almost done. Like banging your head against a wall – it feels good when you stop. It is a beautiful Vancouver night. AKA it is raining. I am certain I was in no danger of overheating. Though I am now sufficiently hungery I may be in danger of overeating.

This is what I looked like at the end (about a half hour later), a bit drippy. Now it is time to eat a real dinner. I think I heard one is supposed to carb load before a run or something. After must be nearly as good.

and so it begins…

Over last past few days I have been contemplating how I might participate in the Run to End Poverty again this year (it is a half marathon on June 26, 2011) without rupturing any organs. The answer was actually pretty simple: “do some training.”

I have observed that casual donors tend to be more enthusiastic if they are getting something visible for their money. And they are often doubly enthusiastic if someone has to suffer just a little bit for their money. Whether it is a 30 hour famine, skipping rope, or eating 100 hotdogs in under a minute, the discomfort of the do-er is worth every penny.

So, here it is: I will run a training kilometre for every dollar pledged. If you care about my organs or about clean water for humans, donate. I won’t ask which cause motivated you.
